The West Building of The National Gallery of Art has the U.S. world class collection of oil paintings, around 50 rooms worth (I think). Almost all the rooms have a attendant (guard), and none of what I saw was behind glass. Excellent place. There was so much and such variety a person (given time) could narrow down thier personal tastes in world art by continent, country, century, style, artist etc. by the definitions in each area and room. I was pressed for time my whole visit in D.C. , so I missed as much or more, than what I saw in all the museums, Smithsonian collections, archieves, and gallerys I visited. Of course that's just the art......I did see more than art in D.C. Despite a camera that always had flash on and ruined most my pictures at the West Building I saw some of the worlds best paintings. I would certainly spend a day just in this gallery, next time I'm on the east coast.
